Lack of Dental Care

Lack of dental care leaves the poor in agony! All people regardless of financial status should have full access to basic dental health care. Far to often, dental care is overlook by many. It's not a problem untl it becomes painful and/or noticable for whatever reason.

Government officials in the US need to recognize dental care is a major concern for all classes. I hope their listening:) Click here to read a good/informative blog from Dr. Heather Olson regarding her thoughts on dental care for the poor.

I live in Reno Nv.
I have a Humana Medicare Advantage plan. Last year I added the upgraded dental plan. Unfortunately it only covered one crown out of four I needed. It also did not cover the proper cleaning and xrays the dentist recommended. So I ended up with a huge bill that went to collections because after I ended up in the hospital on life support for two months and a large bill from that. Please I need help with my dental bills.

n Canada, general oral health care is not included in the Canada Health Act (CHA). Most Canadians receive oral health care through privately operated dental clinics and pay for services through insurance or by paying for it themselves. Some dental services are covered through government dental programs. click here

I'm disabled and on a fixed income that is WAY below the poverty level. I'm in desperate need of dental care and can't afford to have it done. Why? I just want to be able to actually eat.. Chew my food, and carry a conversation without my dentures falling out. I've been in 2 major car accidents, not expected to live through the second one. And in the past 2 years I've had 4 major surgeries, one of which was a tumor growing to my brain. The last was spine surgery and for 9 months now I have been in chronic pain literally 24/ 7. 3 months ago I found a chronic pain specialist and am now on medication, which isn't much better than the pain, because I'm sick to my stomach from it.. I've had dentures since I was about 27 years old, due to my 1st car accident and breaking the posts of my porcelain veneers off inside my gums. My dentist never mentioned implants.. So I had 15 teeth plus the posts that broke pulled, all at the same time and with nothing but novacain. That alone was traumatic enough, and I have had nothing but trouble and gone through heck since. No bone left in my gums. Teeth don't stay in even with adhesive. I have to line the top dentures with cotton so they fit better and to lessen the pain. They slice my gums like someone slicing roast beef. I have to take my bottom denture out to eat and then I can't chew. I'm not exaggerating when I say that every time I eat I choke on something because I can't chew. My confidence and self esteem have gone down hill. It's caused me to be depressed because it's changed the way I look. It shouldn't be impossible to have good dental care. I was quoted by one dentist 60,000 dollars! And that wasn't even including bone grafting. Every dentist I've talked to wants at least 2 or 3,000 dollars up front. I just barely get that a year from disability. I didn't ask to be in the situation I'm in or go through all that I have. I used to work. And hard.. I was a good, hard working, tax paying woman. It's so DEpressing.. DEhumanizing and DEmoralizing. That's not the way it's supposed to be. I'm not looking for a handout. Just some respect as a human being and possibly some help to get something done that should be available to every man woman and child without having to beg. I do want to thank you.. And any and everyone who cares and is helping in whatever way they can. Even if it is just trying to shed some light on such a crisis. Blessings multiplied to all!!
